Water Testing and Well Water Testing
Get a clear picture of your water quality with professional water testing. We test well and municipal water for more than just the basics, identifying issues like hard water, iron, sulfur, lead, chlorine, pH imbalances, and other contaminants that can affect your health, plumbing, appliances, and overall water quality.
On city water?
If your Pittsford home is on the public water supply through MCWA, your main concern is likely hardness, not contamination — the water itself is already tested, treated, and disinfected before it reaches your tap. A water softener is the most common upgrade for city water customers here, since Pittsford's moderately hard to hard water (6–8 grains per gallon) causes scale buildup, dry skin, and shortened appliance life over time. Many city water households also add a carbon filter to remove the chlorine taste and odor left behind by disinfection, or a reverse osmosis system under the kitchen sink for cleaner-tasting drinking water. For households who prefer not to add sodium to their water, we also offer salt-free water conditioners. These don't remove hardness minerals the way a softener does — instead, they condition the minerals so they're less likely to form scale. Ask us which approach is the better fit for your home.
On a private well?
Private wells in and around Pittsford aren't tested or treated by anyone — that responsibility falls entirely on you. Well water can bring its own set of issues beyond hardness, including iron, sulfur odors, sediment, and in some cases bacteria or nitrates from nearby land use. Because every well is different, the right system depends on what's actually in your water. We recommend starting with a free water test so we can identify exactly what you're dealing with before recommending a softener, filtration system, or combination of both.

Pittsford, NY Public Water Quality
If you are using public water supplies in the town or village of Pittsford, your water most likely comes from one of two places — Hemlock Lake to the south, or Lake Ontario to the north. Monroe County Water Authority (MCWA), the public water provider for the town and village of Pittsford, reports that the water source for this area can vary depending on how they route the water. The Pittsford area, because it is located between the areas serviced by Lake Ontario and Hemlock Lake, can expect its water source to vary between the two sources.
Hemlock Lake water boasts one of the lowest hardness levels in the region, averaging about 93 mg/L of total hardness — roughly 5.4 grains per gallon, which falls in the moderately hard range. Lake Ontario water is somewhat harder, averaging around 120 mg/L, or about 7 grains per gallon, which falls into the hard water category. According to MCWA’s 2025 Annual Water Quality Report, most public water in the Pittsford area is moderately hard to hard, typically measuring 6–8 grains per gallon. That’s more than enough to cause scale buildup, staining, and reduced appliance efficiency over time. Installing a water softener helps prevent this damage, lowers maintenance costs, and improves everyday comfort — softer skin and hair, better-lathering soap, and longer-lasting fixtures and water heaters.
All public water in the Pittsford area is disinfected with chlorine, which keeps the water safe from bacteria but leaves behind a taste and odor some homeowners find unpleasant. A carbon filtration system installed in your home removes chlorine before it reaches your taps, noticeably improving water quality without affecting the disinfection that protects the public supply upstream.
What About PFAS?
PFAS (“forever chemicals”) have become a growing concern for water systems nationwide, and many Pittsford-area homeowners ask about them. Based on MCWA’s most recent testing, including the EPA’s UCMR5 monitoring program conducted in 2023–2024, PFOA and PFOS — the two PFAS compounds with established health-based limits — were not detected in Lake Ontario or Hemlock Lake supplies serving the Pittsford area. Trace amounts of PFBA, an unregulated PFAS compound with no current health standard, were detected at very low levels in some sources. While MCWA’s water currently meets all applicable PFAS standards, homeowners who want additional peace of mind can ask us about reverse osmosis drinking water systems, which are effective at reducing PFAS and other emerging contaminants at the point of use.
Lead and Aging Infrastructure
MCWA’s testing shows no detectable lead at the source. However, MCWA has acknowledged it is currently out of compliance with state requirements for optimal corrosion control treatment and must complete corrosion control studies by October 2026. In the meantime, lead can still enter your water through old plumbing, solder, or service lines within your own home — something MCWA cannot control. If your home was built before the 1980s, or if you’re unsure what materials make up your plumbing, a water test or a point-of-use filter certified to reduce lead is a reasonable precaution.
Public water supplies also have measurable levels of trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids, byproducts that form when chlorine reacts with organic matter during disinfection. MCWA’s 2025 results show these remain well within EPA limits, but some Pittsford homeowners still prefer to reduce them at the tap. MCWA also adds fluoride to the water it supplies to the Pittsford area for dental health purposes, which is a personal preference some households choose to filter out.
To find out exactly what’s in your water, Pittsford’s most current Water Quality Report can be obtained on the MCWA’s website. Even more in-depth information can be found by viewing the Water Quality Data Summary report, also on the same website.
