It’s very true that in filtering water, one size does not fit all. What your neighbor needs could well be quite different from what your home may require, based on health concerns, water quality, and other factors. But most homeowners will realize some degree of benefit from installing a whole home water filtration system.
For example, if your home is on public water, the water is most likely treated with chlorine, or similar chemical, for bacteria control purposes. However, chlorine can cause dry skin and some find the chlorine taste unappealing. A whole home carbon filtration system is a very effective and popular option at reducing chlorine and other contaminants.
Another very common issue with water supplies is sediment, especially in private well water supplies. A common and reliable method is canister sediment filters, with replaceable cartridges, that remove unwanted debris from the water for the entire home. Some filter housings come with clear canisters, to give ease of indication when changing is due. Replaceable cartridges come in a variety of standard sizes and filtration ratings, including some with taste and odor reduction capabilities.
In cases where sediment levels are extreme, in that cartridge filters plug too rapidly, a backwashing filtration system may be necessary. In short, these systems are usually a tank filled partially with a filtration media, often a very fine sand. Water is designed to flow through the sand bed, which filters out impurities. At set intervals the water flow reverses and flushes the trapped dirt and sediment to the drain.
Hydrogen sulfide (aka “sulfur) is an infamous contaminant known for its putrid rotten egg smell. In cases where sulfur is an issue, a combination of methods are usually used to effectively condition out the smell. Carbon filtration is a common method to reduce sulfur, often used in conjunction with oxidation, chemical injection, or aeration.

Matthew and assistant recently installed a dual alternating softener, a 20 micron carbon block filter and a water on water reverse osmosis additional filter for drinking water, all in the basement of our Pittsford home with an additional line carrying the ultra high quality drinking water to a seperate smaller faucet in our kitchen sink. Matthew explained that we would receive excellent quality water without some of these more expensive upgrades but we requested them due to special health concerns. We had contacted Aquanology 18 months before when our previous company refused to continue servicing an older system. We were impressed by their many excellent reviews. There was never any pressure or disturbing calls. Matthew took the time to explain everything at our level of understanding, tested our water before the final recommendations and after the installation. They arrived on time, were very considerate with our home and cleaning up after themselves. They disposed of all waste and the old system. Before installing a whole house sediment/dirt removal filter, care should be taken in making sure the filter is sized according to the home size and flow rates, amount of water used, and amount of dirt to be removed. In extreme cases, a backwashing filter may be needed, but sometimes increasing the filter housing size, and making sure you have a quality filter cartridge, will help in a case of plugging too many filters.
Taste and odor cartridge carbon filters are only sufficient for treating minuscule amounts of sulfur smell in water. If they work effectively, it’s usually for a short time, then replacement is needed. For best results in removing medium to high levels of sulfur, carbon filtration should be used with an oxidation method to neutralize the smell.
If taste is the only issue you are worried about, a point-of-use system would likely be sufficient. The same might hold true for some health related contaminants like arsenic, for which it is generally agreed to be safe for bathing, etc., at fairly high levels, but is considered unsafe for drinking at even fairly low levels, therefore making a drinking water system attractive. However, some impurities that cause corrosion, staining, mineral buildup, and so forth, will generally be best treated at the point of entry for all the water in the home.
