Frequently Asked Questions

In general, clay particles (especially colloidal clay) that are suspended in water are usually much too fine to be filtered out by standard filters. Although the filters may turn dirty, they usually only remove a small percentage, and the rest passes through. To effectively filter clay, ultrafiltration is usually needed, which filters down to 0.02 microns. The other alternative is to utilize a coagulation method, in which a compound causes the clay to bind in clumps large enough to be filtered out.

Yes, although this toxin usually requires various steps to ensure the proper removal of first the algal bloom, and the toxin as well. Some of the steps and tools typically used would include ultrafiltration, chlorination, granular activated carbon filtration, and reverse osmosis purification.

Yes, salt can be effectively removed, and the most common method is reverse osmosis. (This is the most common method for desalination of seawater.) How easily it is removed depends largely on the levels of salt. For low to moderate levels, a decent quality RO system can function just fine. However, when levels of salt get very high, the RO system needs to be very specialized in order to handle the high TDS and pressures required. Then the expense of the project will likely be quite high.

How can advanced filtration and membrane water systems improve my water?

One of the most common uses of membrane technology today is reverse osmosis. Check the back label on water bottles, and if it’s not spring water, it’ll likely say “purified by reverse osmosis.” The good news is, thousands of home are utilizing an in-home reverse osmosis membrane purification system, to produce their own “bottled water” from regular tap water, but without all that plastic waste.

Advanced filtration technology can turn cloudy, unappealing water to a sparkling clear substance. Consider ultrafiltration, which filter down to 0.02 microns, and reduces clay particles, tannins (colored water), and organic iron. It even fine enough to aid in removal of unhealthy organisms like bacteria, cysts, parasites, etc.

Or consider colloidal clay, found in various well water sources, which is infamously called “gray water.” Because it’s so fine, it easily passes through most common cartridge filters barely hindered. Methods such as ultrafiltration or coagulation in combination with a backwashing filter, are proven effective at filtering out colloidal clay, and restoring clarity to your water.

Who wouldn’t dream of owning their own lakeside home. Homes located by lakes sometimes use the lake itself as the primary source of water for household use. Is it possible to turn water from a surface source like a pond or lake, into something suitable for household use? The answer is yes, if you have the right tools, you can usually make such water drinkable.

Harnessing advanced filtration like ultrafiltration will reduce sediment and other impurities. This helps make the water crystal clear in preparation for UV disinfection or similar method. Top it off with reverse osmosis membrane purification to make drinking water that pleases most everyone.

Some private well water sources have extremely high mineral content levels, commonly from salt, sulphates, hardness, or other related minerals. Such issues are not always properly addressed with a traditional water softener. Here is where a whole house RO system comes to the rescue by providing ultra-conditioned water for the whole home. In such cases, a whole house RO often reduces maintenance cost/labor and provides a better overall experience for the end user.
