Whole house Water Softener Systems for Upstate New York

A whole house water softener helps with water hardness – it’s those minerals in your water that leave behind those unsightly water spots, crusty buildup, and stubborn chalky stains. If left unchecked, this hardness buildup can cause low pressure from faucet failure, buildup in plumbing, and premature failure and efficiency loss in water heaters and appliances. Water hardness refers to the minerals present in your water, which can create unattractive water marks, crusty deposits, and persistent chalky residues.

The good news is, there is a reasonable fix. Whole home water softeners and other whole home filtration and conditioning systems are available to take care of the hard water issues that make your life difficult. As a full-service water quality company, Aquanology Water Conditioning and Filtration stands ready to assist with custom-tailored soft water solutions for your unique needs.

What Is a Whole House Water Softener?

A whole house water softener is the unit that filters the water as it comes into your home, usually accompanied by a salt bin. These units function with tiny resin beads inside the softener tank that attract and remove the hardness minerals, calcium and magnesium, and replace them with the soft mineral sodium. This is why water softeners are also called ion exchange systems.

Ion exchange water softeners are not to be confused with salt-free water conditioners. Salt-free filtration systems typically work differently from water softeners; rather than removing the hardness minerals, they change the scale-forming properties of those minerals so that the minerals are not as apt to cause troublesome buildup. Since the hardness minerals are still in the water, the salt-free conditioners are not actually softeners. For more comparison info, read our blog How to decide: Salt-Based Water Softener vs. Salt-free Water Conditioners.

Whole house water softeners are also not to be confused with whole house reverse osmosis systems. While reverse osmosis systems also remove water hardness, they function on a different principle and do not use salt. Signs You Need a Whole House Water Softener System for Home

Before getting excited about installing a water softener, it’s important to recognize some pointers about whether or not a water softener is necessary for you. Here are some common signs to watch for:

  1. Soap not lathering- water hardness minerals bind up your soap, leaving less active ingredients to get the job done.
  2. Spot on dishes and glassware – when water evaporates, hard white spots left behind are telltale signs of hardness.
  3. Dry skin and hair issues – hardness minerals dried on your skin and hair can wreak havoc, especially on those who are extra sensitive.
  4. Scale buildup on faucet and showerhead- hardness minerals left behind accumulate in shower heads and faucet aerators, causing reduced flow.
  5. Water heater and appliance failure – elements going bad on water heaters, and trouble with laundry and dishwashers often results from hard water.

Addressing your hard water issues early is important to proactively avoid these issues before they occur.

Types of Whole House Water Softeners & Conditioners

Salt-Based Water Softeners

  • As mentioned, water softeners tanks are filled with tiny resin beads that capture the calcium and magnesium hardness minerals and exchange them for sodium.
  • Every so often, based on how much water you use, the system “regenerates,” in which the hardness minerals are flushed to the drain, and the resin bed is replenished with fresh sodium from the salt.
  • Water softeners are best for very hard water, or situations in which the best water quality is desired.
  • Because they remove the calcium & magnesium hardness ions completely, water softeners offer some benefits that other systems don’t, such as softer skin and hair, less staining, and less soap consumption
  • The downsides to water softeners are that they have slightly higher upfront costs compared to alternatives, they do generate some wastewater, and require maintenance in the form of salt refills. Keep in mind, though, that new technology has vastly improved the efficiency of softeners in salt and wastewater.

Salt-Free Water Conditioners

  • Compared to actual water softeners, salt-free conditioners don’t actually remove the hardness, but condition the water so that less scale is produced. Sometimes salt-free systems are referred to as scale-reduction systems.
  • Salt-free scale reduction systems work best on low to moderate water hardness and low total alkalinity, or if the best water quality is not a necessity.
  • Pros: Salt-free systems use no salt, make no wastewater, and are easier to install, which results in lower upfront costs. They also don’t typically require monthly or yearly maintenance.
  • Cons: Salt-free conditioners don’t actually remove hardness, which means that they do a half job at improving the water. Also, they require the scale reduction media inside the system to be replaced every 3-5 years, which can be fairly expensive.

Benefits of a Whole House Water Softener System

  • Appliance & Plumbing Protection – extend the useful lifespan of plumbing, faucets, appliances, and water heaters by reducing the harsh scale that causes abrasive deterioration. Even simple things like toilet seals will experience a better duration.
  • Water Pressure & Flow – with less buildup in faucet ends and shower heads, you’ll realize more consistent water pressure and flow.
  • Skin & Hair Health – experience less dry skin issues and more manageable hair by softening the water you bathe in. With the hardness removed, the absence of hard minerals behind on your skin, a better bathing experience is the result.
  • Better Cleaning – get rid of the hard and crusty buildup on faucets, dishes, and more by softening the water. Plus, use less soap to get the job done, thanks to the detergents working better.
  • Lower Costs – decrease your heating and maintenance costs with water heaters that run more efficiently with less build-up problems. Keep your expensive appliances running better, longer, and reduce costly repair bills.
