When Should I Replace My Water Softener?
A water softener is an essential system for homes with hard water, preventing mineral deposits in pipes, appliances, and water fixtures. But like any appliance,
A whole house water softener helps with water hardness – it’s those minerals in your water that leave behind those unsightly water spots, crusty buildup, and stubborn chalky stains. If left unchecked, this hardness buildup can cause low pressure from faucet failure, buildup in plumbing, and premature failure and efficiency loss in water heaters and appliances. Water hardness refers to the minerals present in your water, which can create unattractive water marks, crusty deposits, and persistent chalky residues.
The good news is, there is a reasonable fix. Whole home water softeners and other whole home filtration and conditioning systems are available to take care of the hard water issues that make your life difficult. As a full-service water quality company, Aquanology Water Conditioning and Filtration stands ready to assist with custom-tailored soft water solutions for your unique needs.
A whole house water softener is the unit that filters the water as it comes into your home, usually accompanied by a salt bin. These units function with tiny resin beads inside the softener tank that attract and remove the hardness minerals, calcium and magnesium, and replace them with the soft mineral sodium. This is why water softeners are also called ion exchange systems.
Ion exchange water softeners are not to be confused with salt-free water conditioners. Salt-free filtration systems typically work differently from water softeners; rather than removing the hardness minerals, they change the scale-forming properties of those minerals so that the minerals are not as apt to cause troublesome buildup. Since the hardness minerals are still in the water, the salt-free conditioners are not actually softeners. Whole house water softeners are also not to be confused with whole house reverse osmosis systems. While reverse osmosis systems also remove water hardness, they function on a different principle and do not use salt.
